I had the great pleasure yesterday of spending two hours and a couple of beers with my friend Bill Perrone, a 99 years young WW 11 veteran. The St. Lucie VSO office and my veterans charity ( The Major Goldsmith Fund - honoring my father ) are working to relocate him into a better and safer housing unit.
He opened up about the war more than usual and I enjoyed his stories and he listened to me about my fathers, also a WW 11 veteran in the E.T.O. who has been gone far too long. I felt like we were on hallowed ground he and I , having such a man of the " Greatest Generation " tell me things. And a compliment from him about my charity was of the highest honor !
All of our branches of service leading in making the world safe again is one of the most compelling episodes of history and being at a table with such a soldier will stay with me a long while. They saved a world going mad. How many of us can ever say we ever changed someone's life !
Today at 3:00 p.m. local time is " Taps Across America ". A great story starting with a man playing taps in Tacoma , Wa. ,a CBS news correspondent and an Air Force bugler.Lets hope the weather permits us to hear local musicians play the most haunting 24 notes ever !
A heartfelt Thank You to all veterans that fought for our great country !! And to Mr. Bill Perrone. Lastly, thank you Dad ! You will always be my hero.
